Police reported they were alerted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Around fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then located numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.

A high-ranking official commented the vandalism made him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
