An extensive 60-day cruise around Australia has been cancelled following the fatal incident of an elderly lady who was stranded by the ship on a distant island.

Suzanne Rees had been hiking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the party for a pause. The ship sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the ship staff realised the passenger was unaccounted for.

An extensive rescue mission located her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the event, together with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that guests and staff on the vessel were notified that the rest of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also issued an revised announcement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" preventing any additional guests from getting on the vessel.
